Louis Rees-Zammit's first start back in rugby union was an eventful one as he scored a try, got into a fight and was sin-binned against his old club Gloucester.
The Welsh winger was a central figure in the PREM Cup match at Kingsholm, where his Bristol Bears side impressed against their local rivals. Rees-Zammit crossed for a try after just 22 minutes and saw plenty of the ball as he continued his rugby comeback following 18 months in the NFL.
It wasn't without controversy, though, as he was sin binned late in the first half for a scrap with fellow Welshman Caio Jones, with the two players arguing, swearing and bumping each other as they left the field.
As well as scoring a try, Rees-Zammit also bombed one opportunity as he looked to be clear following a trademark chip and chase before knocking on 10 metres from the line.
The 24-year-old former Gloucester man became a target for the home crowd, who revelled in goading him as tensions flared in the opening 40 minutes.
Earlier, Rees-Zammit had shown what a threat he still is, collecting a nice offload form Toby Baker to put him into space and speed around Jake Morris on the outside. He threw the ball in the air in celebration as the home crowd jeered.
It all ended in a respectful manner, though, as the home supporters applauded their former favourite when he was replaced by Max Pepper after 56 minutes.
The Gallagher PREM season kicks off next weekend, with Bristol's glamour new signing looking ready for action after weeks of working on his match fitness and losing weight after his time in America.
He is desperate to resume his international career, with Steve Tandy almost certain to name him in the autumn squad for matches against Argentina, Japan, South Africa and New Zealand.
"I think you wouldn’t rule anything out," said Tandy when asked whether Rees-Zammit would be included in his autumn squad.
"Zammo brings a big effect and excitement by coming back. I think it’s great for the game.

"He’s gone away to experience something new, which is class. I’m sure he will be in outstanding physical condition.
"The more players we have available to represent our country the better. That’s exciting and makes our jobs easier.
"It will also make our calls on selection a lot more challenging in terms of selection as we’ve already got some very good back-three players. Adding Zammo into that makes it even more exciting for not only us, but the fans as well."
