Prepare to be amazed! Daniel Day-Lewis, the legendary actor known for his immersive method acting and dedication to his craft, has re-emerged, looking almost unrecognizable, at the premiere of his new film, Anemone. This marks a significant moment, especially considering his self-imposed retirement from acting back in 2017 after winning his third Best Actor Oscar for Phantom Thread.
At the premiere, held in New York, Day-Lewis sported a distinguished look: a classic black suit paired with a crisp white shirt and a gray tie. His silver hair and black-rimmed glasses completed the transformation, making him appear worlds away from his previous roles. Accompanying him was his son, Ronan, who co-wrote and directed Anemone. Ronan opted for a more relaxed style, wearing a black suit, a red shirt, and Converse sneakers.
Day-Lewis's decision to step away from the spotlight was a shock to many, as he's known for his intense commitment to his roles, often staying in character even off-set. His representative stated at the time, "Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years." The statement also emphasized that this was a private decision.
But here's where it gets controversial... What brought him back? It was his son, Ronan, who was the catalyst for his return. The film, Anemone, features Day-Lewis as a troubled recluse who reconnects with his brother. Day-Lewis revealed that the desire to collaborate with Ronan was the driving force behind his decision to return to acting. He explained that he felt a sense of sadness knowing Ronan would pursue filmmaking, and he wanted to find a way to work together.
"I had some residual sadness because I knew Ronan was going to go on to make films, and I was walking away from that," he said. "I thought, 'Wouldn't it be lovely if we could do something together and find a way of maybe containing it, so that it didn't necessarily have to be something that required all the paraphernalia of a big production?'"
The actor admitted that he was hesitant at first, experiencing "low-level fear" about re-engaging with filmmaking. He shared that while he always loved the work, it was the lifestyle that he struggled with. "The work was always something I loved. I never, ever stopped loving the work. But there were aspects of the way of life that went with it that I'd never come to terms with…there's something about that process that left me feeling hollowed out at the end of it."
Day-Lewis, now 68 years old, found his passion for acting rekindled while working with Ronan. He described the experience as "pure joy." He is a proud father of three, with his eldest son, Gabriel-Kane, being a model and musician. His other son, Cashel, prefers to stay out of the spotlight with his musical compositions, and Ronan is a Yale University graduate and a talented painter and director.
